more - German electricity supplier has once again extended the deadline for the submission of binding offers for its waste incineration subsidiary Eon Energy from Waste (EEW), a person familiar with the matter told the news agency dpa, confirming media reports. Eon did not wish to comment on the information.According to dpa, the deadline, which was due to expire on 8 June after being postponed for a first time, has been extended for about two weeks. At the stock exchange, this is seen as an indication that the Eon is encountering difficulties to obtain the desired price for the subsidiary. Given the second extension, it was questionable whether the division could be sold for the €800m to €1bn Eon hoped to achieve, dpa quoted an exchange trader's comment.

more - Following a decline in prices for ordinary recovered paper grades at the beginning of May, no further price reductions were observed on the German market in the subsequent weeks. However EUWID respondents believe that June may bring another fall in prices for ordinary recovered paper grades. Recovered paper demand from the Far East is still weak and has resulted in excess supply on the German domestic market, especially for supermarket corrugated paper and board (1.04). The surplus is becoming even more pronounced as suppliers from neighbouring markets, facing the same problems with sales to the Far East, try to sell off additional volumes in Germany.

more - The British waste company Shanks Group plc raised revenues from continuing operations by 5 per cent to £750m (ca. €933m) in its financial year 2011/12 ended 31 March. The profit for the year reached £26.8m (ca. €33m), which represents a 22 per cent improvement compared with the year before, according to the group's preliminary results published on Thursday. Chief executive Peter Dilnot described the company's performance as "robust" amid challenging markets. He reported that earnings growth had been driven mainly by increasing returns from the company's strategic investment programme and "focused management action to streamline operations". Difficult trading conditions in solid waste activities in the Benelux region were offset by strong performance from the group's UK, organic waste and hazardous waste operations, Mr Dilnot added.

more - Industry insiders continue to be confident about the current supply of waste wood in Germany and are agreed that no shortages are on the cards for the next few months, either. Arisings and the amount of waste wood arriving at processors' yards are essentially unchanged compared with last year, the vast majority of EUWID sources believed. However, most winter inventories have still not been depleted due to the mild weather in recent months, meaning that this waste wood was entering the market and serving as a bargaining chip during price talks. In a few instances, agreed deadlines for clearing winter inventories had not been met.

more - French environmental services concern Veolia Environnement saw world-wide revenues from waste management activities in the first quarter of 2012 inch only €7m from the adjusted prior-year figure to €2.236bn. In Germany and in the UK, the division's turnover came in 6.3 per cent lower than it had been a year earlier, according to a quarterly statement released in Paris on Friday. The decrease stemmed from a moderate drop-off in processed waste volumes and lower prices for secondary raw materials. The price trends and the difficult macro-economic environment were also responsible for a decline in the division's operating profit compared with the first quarter of 2011, according to Veolia.
Prices for lower recovered paper grades decline in Italy
03.05.2012 - An increase in supply on Italy‘s recovered paper market led to price cuts for ordinary grades in April, according to the latest EUWID market report. Supply improved due to the shortage of shipping containers
more - An increase in supply on Italy‘s recovered paper market paved the way for a round of price cuts for ordinary grades in April, according to the latest EUWID market report. The improved availability is the result of the Europe-wide shortage of shipping containers, which led to a sharp dip in exports to Asia. While peak prices had occasionally been cut at the start of April, the lion’s share of the reductions took place as the month progressed.

German recovered paper market balanced despite container shortage
11.04.2012 - Prices were unchanged across all grades on the German recovered paper market in early April. The shortage of containers and not a lack of demand had all but eliminated exports to the Far East this month.
more - Prices for all grades on the German recovered paper market remained unchanged in April. The lack of exports to the Far East is the most unusual feature of the current market situation. According to market insiders, this is not due to weak demand, but rather to the inability of exporters to get access to containers, even if they are willing to pay the sea freight rates, which have gone up by €500 this month. As a result, even orders placed in March yet to be filled, said a merchant. The container shortage is said to be caused by ships being held back in eastern Asian ports, apparently to reduce the supply of freight space and make it easier to raise freight rates.Although this had meant that more recovered paper remained on the German market, merchants were able to sell their domestic material, even with additional volumes reportedly coming from the Netherlands. There is good demand from paper mills for recovered paper, EUWID was told. The companies continuing production through the Easter holidays required inventory. In addition, the three upcoming public holidays in May on which no recovered paper can be delivered may have also have factored into this month's buying. The lower arisings of recovered paper in April also prevented an excess of supply from developing.
