The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics is an internationally known research institution in the field of logistics. The department ‘Environment and Resource Logistics’ has been dealing scientifically with the field of waste management since 1988. The main focus lies on the topics of waste disposal logistics, the design of reverse logistics concepts as well as business development.
Within the framework of the Twinning program, which purpose is to prepare candidate countries for joining the EU, the Fraunhofer IML gained substantial experience in the support of national and regional administration in questions of waste management. Within the scope of these projects, the administrative and conceptual foundations for compliance with European environmental and waste regulations were laid.
On behalf of the World Bank / IFC, Fraunhofer IML developed and assessed business models for the private recycling sector in emerging markets. Here, the attention is mainly on the development of economically sustainable business models against the background of a strong informal recycling sector in these countries. Furthermore, the identification of stakeholders who are capable of running these businesses is an important aspect.

The department ‘Environment and Resource Logistics‘ of the Fraunhofer IML deals with different logistics problems and offers consulting and strategy services in the following specialist areas:
Within the projects with trade and industry as well as with public bodies, Fraunhofer IML applies latest techniques of process optimisation and planning. In close coordination with the project partners custom software and system solutions are developed, e.g. in the WICI laboratory. This is a high-performance laboratory for testing, presentation and research in the field of ICT in waste management.
In its newsletter ‘Environment and Resources‘ (available in German only) the department Environment and Resource Logistics’ informs about recent projects, research activities and main topics.
With the ‘Network for innovative closed loop recycling technologies NiK’ Fraunhofer IML provides a platform for the preparation, initiation and realisation of creative solutions for recycling technologies and strategies. The network aims at innovative and efficient solutions for waste prevention, recycling and disposal. Under the umbrella of NiK, e.g. the EUWAS (European Waste Sector Assistant) project was initiated, in which Fraunhofer IML participated in the setup of a web portal. The EUWAS portal provides relevant information on waste management under consideration of European harmonised standards.
Together with the Dutch software company NMPO B.V., Fraunhofer IML developed a tour planning application which is customised to fit the special needs of container business (skips and roll-on roll-off containers). Besides tour planning, the software comprises the visualisation of plants such as depots, waste management plants or customer locations as well as the tours itself.
The application is part of the VISTA software family offered by NMPO B.V. This software solution is a pure server based web application, so the user needs only a web browser to take full advantage from the application. Time consuming and costly installation, support and updates on the client side are therefore not necessary, all updates are directly done on the server and are directly accessible to all users.
