I.A.R. – The Department of Processing and Recycling of the RWTH Aachen University is one of Europe´s leading research departments, specialized in the development of sustainable waste management, processing technologies and recycling systems.

Description of Activities

The Department of Processing and Recycling offers top level teaching courses, as well as research and development (R&D) for new treatment processes and a variety of external services for industry clients and waste disposal companies.
Amongst others the following topics are subject of current R&D activities of the department:

• Waste Characterization / Sampling of Waste
• Simulation and Modelling of Processes
• Mechanical Waste Processing prior to Biological Treatment
• Recycling of plastics
• Recovery of Refuse derived Fuel (RDF) from Municipal Solid Waste
• Recycling of Metals (Recycling of End of Life Vehicles (ELVs), Electric and Electronic Scrap)
• Waste Processing on a Pilot Plant Scale
• Development and Testing of Sensor Based Sorting Machines
• Aufbereitung von Gewerbeabfällen,
• Verfahren zur Aufbereitung von produktions-spezifischen Abfällen wie z.B. Schleifschlämmen.

Service to Industry

The I.A.R. offers a variety of trouble shootings for clients from industry and waste disposal companies. This concerns practical tests with miscellaneous input materials in the laboratories of the Department. The available equipment allows a rich variety of opportunities to conduct tests in pilot plant scale. Investigations can be carried out on site in waste treatment plants, for instance in order to characterize specific material mass streams or to elaborate a material flow balance of complete plants. I.A.R. is a service partner for industry in waste processing with an emphasis in following fields:

• Development of recycling processes and recycling concepts
• Elaboration of technical studies and expertises
• Development and construction of prototypes
• Optimization of processes and recycling plants
• Offered symposia: “Sensor Based Sorting” 2004, 2006, 2008
