Germany’s often-quoted position as the “export world champion” is based not on hyperbole but on long-established and proven facts. Specifically, in terms of monetary goods exports, Germany topped the international league for the fifth time in succession in 2007. In 2007, three-quarters of Germany’s total exports went to European countries, two-thirds of them to European Union member states alone. Between 1995 and 2006, exports to Germany’s 25 most important partner countries increased by 135%.
The export potential arising from foreign demand specifically for waste disposal technologies (processing technologies, composting technology, mechanical-biological treatment and waste incineration) has been identified in various studies commissioned by the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA). For example, an investment requirement amounting to € 43.8 billion for the period 2004-2020 has been identified for selected countries (including the EU, Russia, Turkey, ASEAN countries, China and India). It is assumed that a proportion of the plant technology will be manufactured in the destination countries themselves. Actual import demand is therefore estimated at around € 20 billion, with exports from Germany likely to account for around € 5.7 billion (at current prices).
The Environmental Technology Atlas estimates the current world market volume for waste disposal technologies at around € 30 billion; German companies hold a market share of about 25% in this sector.
